Aur Roti Fir Jal Gayi

Subah utha to sir ka dard kuch kam tha. Aaj shanivaar tha to ek ghanta jyada sone ko mila. Jab shanivaar, itvaar ko chutti milti hai to lagta hai is duniya me sach me bhagwaan hain.

Kal Valentine Day ka paawan divas tha. Is din ko kuch log bade chaav se manaate hain. Unke saathi to aksar badal jaate hain, lekin tyohaar ka din aur josh har saal vaise hi kaayam rehta hai. Aur ye log aapko yaad dilana nahi bhoolte ki aaj Valentine Day hai, jaise aapko calender dekhna na aata ho. Kabhi kabhi to aisa lagta hai ki ye din un logon ko jalane ke liye banaya gaya hai jinke paas apni koi personal girlfriend ya boyfriend nahi hai. Kaash, girlfriend-boyfriend bhaade pe milte to ek din ke liye saath rakh lete.

Aap kisi bhi din sare aam jillat thop sakte hain. Mere ek param-vairaagi dost ka kehna hai, pyaar vyaar sab moh maaya hota hai. Aur mera maana hai ki maaya ke moh me hi Valentine Day manaya jaata hai.

Uth kar socha, bahut din hue, aaj chhole bhature khaaye jayen. Lekin wallet nikala to bas 10 hi Rupye the. Phone uthaya to dekha ek dost ka message aaya hua tha. "Yaar lagta  hai saali se fir breakup ho gaya".

Kal maine din me use phone kiya tha. Uska kuch din pehle uski girlfriend se break up hua tha. Use santavana ki jaroorat thi, aur mujhe Valentine Diwas par updesh ke liye ek shrota ki. Maine phone kar uski girlfriend ko khoob gaaliyaan di. Socha use accha lagega. "Valentine Diwas bajaarwaad ki upaj hai" vishay par ek behtareeen bhasan bhi de maara. Usne bina kuch kahe sab chup chaap suna. Fir aag babula ho bola "Haraamkhor teri bhabhi hai. Uske saath mera fir se make up ho gaya hai. Agli baar use kuch kaha to goli se uda dunga. Aur baajaarwadi duniya nahi, tu baajaru aadmi hai." Kehkar usne phone kaat diya. Beech me kahin usne "naach na jaane aangan theda" muhvara bhi prayog kiya tha jo mujhe ab yaad nahi.

Pata nahi ek din me uski girlfriend "saali" se "teri bhabhi" kaise ban gayi. Aur fir agle hi din fir "saali" ban gayi. Lekin main uski dasha samajh sakta hoon. Log kehte hain pyaar andha hota hai. Mujhe to lagta hai andhe log pyaar kar baithte hain. Kameeno ko ye dikhai nahi deta ki kaun si girt me girne jaa rahe hain.

Maine thaali pakdi aur fir usme 3 katori aata daala. Canestar me aata bhi ab naa ke baraabar tha lekin aaj ka kaam chal hi jaana tha. Kal ki kal dekhi jaayegi. Jab aate-daal ka bhaav pata chalta hai to fir pyaar ko koi bhaav nahi deta. Jo log kehte hain ki vo sirf pyaar ke sahare reh sakte hain, shayad vo log roti nahi khaate. Pyaar khaate hain. Khair mujhe apne haath ki jali rotiyaan hi pasand hain.

Aata thaali me daalkar maine usme gilaas se naap kar bade dhyaan se paani milaya. Aur fir aata goonthna shuru kiya. Varna hamesha aata gila hokar halwa ban jaata tha. Aur fir apna khud ka haal bhi, gareebi me aata geela jaisa hi tha.

Pados ke Mishra ji ko radio tej avaaj me sunane ki aadat thi. Agar kabhi unhe tok do to vo aavaaj aur badha dete the, fir kehte arrey maine suna nahi. Sunkar bura laga. Mukhyamantri ji Dilli vaalon ko Valentine Day par Jan Lokayukta bill ka tohfa dena chahte the. Vo baat alag hai ki pyaar karne vaalon ko bhrastachaar se koi farak nahi padta. Unka dimaag to pyaar ne pehle hi bhrast kar rakha hai. Lekin kuch logon ke liye unka isteefa bhi Valentine Day ke gift se kam nahi tha. AAP vaale apni faaltu raajneeti se Dilli ke logon ka BAAP banana chahte the, lekin Dilli ke logon ne  dikha diya ki yahan asli baap kaun hai.

Maine apna aata ghoonthna khatam kiya aur tava stove par chadaya. Aata sahi nahi guntha tha, lagta tha Congress aur BJP ka gathbandhan ho. Aadha  geela aadha sookha. Lekin Aap ko kya parvaah thi. Apne ko to bas is gathjod se nikali rotiyan sekni thi..

Achaa hi hai bhagwaan ko bhookh kam lagti hai. Varna itne aate me to ek hi jan ki bhookh mit sakti thi.

Dheemi aanch par teen chaar rotiyan bel kar sab saath me hi chadha di. Ab bhookh sehen nahi ho rahi thi. Jo bhi tha jaldi pakaana tha.

Is mahine TV, akhbaar, gaano se tauba kar rakhi thi. To time paas karne ka jariya hi nahi tha. Gussa aur badh raha tha. Apne aap ko aise ool jalool pachdon me daalne ke liye 4-5 baar kosa. Fir jaakar, kursi par baith kuch fal kaatne laga. Fal kaatata kam aur khaata jyada.

Fir Roma ka phone aaya. Baachen khil gayi. Din me usase ek baar baat na ho to dinn hi poora nahi hota. Aap soch rahe honge ki Roma meri girlfriend hai. Chee chee, aap aisa socha bhi kaise sakte hain. Nahi aisa bilkul nahi hai. Hum to sirf ghanist mitra hain. Ek baar maine Roma ko kaha ki main tumse bahut pyaar karta hoon. To Roma tunak kar boli, "No, we are just close friends". Tabse Roma meri ghanist mitra bin gayi.

Roma ko shor pasand nahi tha aur Mishra ji radio band karne ke mood me nahi lag rahe the, to maine chhat par jaakar uska phone uthaya. Oopar halki halki baarish ho rahi thi. Phone uthate hi chillane lagi ki phone uthane me itni der kyon lag gayi. Main samjha gaya bhains ke aage been bajaane ka koi faayada nahi hai.

Bola ki shaam ko milo, chalke tumhare liye ek gamla khareedte hain. To vo hans ke boli nahi aaj to bahut kaam hai, kal milte hain. Fir usne kal ka ghatnakram vistaar poorvak sunaya. Usse baat karne me khud bolne ka mauka kam hi milta hai, lekin mujhe bhi uski avaaj sunana pasand hai to main kabhi sikhayat nahi karta. Aakhri me usne "Happy Belated Valentine Day" bol kar phone rakh diya.

Fir yaad aaya ki main to neeche rotiyan chadha kar aaya tha. Bhaagkar neeche pahuncha to dekha ki chai kaashi nadi ki tarah ufaan par thi. Aur rotiyan jalkar koyla ho chuki thi.

Aur kuch is tarah aaj fir roti jal gayi. Aaj rotiyan aur dino se jyada hi jali hui thi. Inko khane ka matlab apna shanivaar aur itvaar dono kharaab karna tha. Rotiyan dustbin me fainki aur kitchen saaf kiya. Ab to chai peene ka  bhi mann nahi kar raha tha.

Ab ek hi chaara tha. Maine bhagwaan ko roti khilai thi, ab unke karz utaarne ka samay aa gaya tha.

Paas ke gurudwaare me langar ka samay ho raha tha.

Book Review: "Tribes"

Reading 50 books this year is one of my new year's resolutions. I am running late on it though and I take this opportunity to blame my other resolution of publishing 31 posts in January. It's taking all my focus right now, if not all the time.

But anyway, I had decided to do a book review today and I would go ahead with one. Now, I don't know how to review a book. I haven't even read a full fledged book review to know what it actually looks like. That's exactly the reason I am doing it here.

On to the review....

Trivia:

Book Name: "Tribes: We need you to Lead us".
Pages : 83 (cover to cover).
Author : Seth Godin
Genre: Non-fiction. Leadership.

What's it All About

I read this book in about a week a few months ago, during my journey to and from work. This is the book that affirmed my belief that you can pack a punch in a small book (and hence I came up with my definition of anything over 50 pages to be a book).

I haven't read too many books on leadership (heck, I haven't read too many any books). But I can still safely say it's not a conventional book. The author keeps the style as conversational throughout the book. It does 2 things. First, it keeps you engaged throughout the book. Second, this gives the author the leverage to advise without sounding preachy. The book itself seems to be a collection of small and different but cohesively related articles. And that's a very new style I have seen in a book.

It asks you to be a heretic and break the status-quo all the time, because the tribes (which the author describes as a bunch of people with common goal and means to communicate) want someone, anyone to lead them . The book tells you, almost pleads you why you shouldn't become a manager. It gives you the idea that leadership is possible even at the lowest of the levels, and you don't need to have years of experience under you belt to lead. Anyone can lead, it's just matter of deciding when and where.

But the most important part of the book is that it not only talks about you as a leader but the greater good of the community that you are going to lead (which might involve just another person beside you). The central idea of course, as the titles says, is Tribes. Without a strong, cohesive tribe, people who believe in each other and trust you to lead them; you just cannot be a great leader.

The most interesting part remains the number of new ideas and theories that the author presents from the start to the end. Some of these ideas are immediately implementable in anyone's life even if they are not interested to lead a tribe.

Who should read it?

  • Anyone looking for a short inspiring/interesting book.
  • Anyone who hasn't read anything from the author. I believe 7/10 people would like what he has to say.
  • If you want to know more about the jargons like tribes, heretics, status-quo, partisans, movement, sheepwalking, difference between crowds and tribes, difference between faith and religion, why we are still factory workers, when NOT to lead, how to be wrong etc. etc.

Who shouldn't read it.

  • Fiction readers, of course should stay away. Although the author does give a lot of anecdotes about a number of unconventional leaders throughout his book.
  • Anyone who reads a book to wind down. It's more of a book to instill new ideas in your brain. And of course, it's best served when you take some actions after reading it.
  • Anybody looking for a self-help book on leadership. It won't give you a step by step of being a leader. The author is just trying to sell you how easy it is to be a leader in today's world.

About the Author

Seth Godin is a very well known American Entrepreneur, Marketer and Writer. I have known about Seth for a few years now, but only recently started following his blog. He writes almost 2 blogs a day, mostly less than a 100 words.  He is an exceptionally delightful to-the-point writer. Personally, he inspires me to cut out the fluff in my own writings, always be looking for more ideas, and being consistent. So many times his succinct articles have made me sit down and say "Wow! Now, that's an idea worth trying. " They say he is a great speaker too, but haven't heard anything from him yet.

Everything else

Seth has written quite a lot of books. I leave it up to you, to find out how to get "Tribes" should you decide to read it. Also, if you have a favorite book, which you think I should read, please do tell. I want to keep it in my buffer for the rest of the year.  As I (hopefully) read more and more books, there's a chance, with time it might become one of the regular posts on this blog.

I LOL* YOU!

[*LOL: Love Only Love]

Caution: This mostly contains slap-stick low-level comedy, with a lot of inside jokes involving close friends. So if you don't already know about it, you should probably skip reading it. You have been warned!!

Prologue: This is an imaginary story heavily inspired by real life friends. No animals (or friends) were harmed while making this story. This story was started by Skand and has been completed by RavS as part of a challenge.

(Skand's version...)

Part 1 :

"I luv u... think I like u..."

(RavS version starts here.. :)

कहते  हैं , "do u think I am A Raja?

Part 6: Talk in a Metro

You promised me 2 years ago.

So, I dropped the idea.

LOL.

LOL.

Govt.

Narrator: Yay! ;-)
)

Happy   ending होती , By God. LOL.

जब  फ़ोन  लेने  के  लिए  कहा, तो  blog post लिख  डाला "Why I don't have a Mobile".

भैंस on phone (not literally!): Hello, who on blue-green hell is this?

गधी  (on the other side of line): बस सब सही चल रहा है, सोचा तुझसे बात करूँ।

Part 10: The End.

Anyways, finally

गधा : That's not relevant.

OMG Ubuntu!

Nothing. I just want to say, I love only love you.

Untitled: Part 1 (Fiction)

It was a Sunday morning. She had been sitting on the bench at the bus stop for last 10 minutes. She seemed a little stressed, waiting anxiously for the bus. She kept fiddling with the pen in her fingers, clicking it rapidly. In fact, I was a little worried about the pen in her hands. For every bus that came on the stop her eyes would lit up, only to glow down realizing it's not what she was looking for. For a moment I thought of asking what bus she was looking for, only to realize that it won't matter anyway.

I was so glued to watching her anticipating her carriage that I forgot to take my own bus. No, not forgotten to be honest, but pretended to forget! At least 5 buses would have gone by, by that time, but my mind was struggling to rationalize why not to take any of them: "Hey that's a little crowded... Oh, that bus doesn't seem to have proper seats. Hmm... that would take me through the longer route, I will definitely take the next one...". But somewhere I knew the real reason why I was ready to be late for the meeting!

After about 17 minutes, bus with route no. 341 came and stopped at the stand. It was that old modelled state corporation buses, that should have retired at least a decade ago but like the presidents of the sports associations in our country, they just refused to go away. She got up and hastily moved towards it. It was a rude shock for me, for I thought her bus would never come and I would enjoy her nervous waiting forever... But as they say "forever is too long to be true".

So, that was the little one sided meeting I had and from here onwards we were to supposed to go our own separate ways. Except, that I felt a deep anxiety in my heart, and the thought of never seeing that stranger ever again was surprisingly unbearable! Just as I saw that stupid old bus starting to dance its way on the road, I knew it was now or never decision I had to make. I rarely do things impulsively, but this time I found myself running madly behind the bus- which I had no idea, where it was going- shouting "Stoooppp! Myy Busss!".

The bus would have moved at least 50 metres away when I started my sprint, but thank God for that old 'khataara' bus that I hopped into it within next 50 metres. As I struggled to catch my breath while hanging at the gate steps, I realized that other passengers were staring at me, passing me that weird "what a lunatic, was he sleeping when the bus was standing at the stop?" look.

There was also that troubling thought of not reaching my own destination on time, but I chose to throw those useless thoughts out of window, and searched frantically inside the bus. There was that teenaged couple standing near the gate talking teenaged-nonsense, there was that aunty haggling with the conductor over the petty fair just ahead of me, and also that old man looking out of the window with his glum eyes... but where was she? Did I... Did I hop into the wrong bus?

... It feels good.

The faces that you make,
makes me feel good.
And when a smile comes on that very face,
it feels good.

When you forget something in between,
it feels good.
And then you remind me the same thing,
it feels good.

When there is something to do, that you can't,
it feels good.
Because making you understand,
is what feels good.

When you go bury yourself in studies,
it feels good.
And when the same studies puts you to sleep,
it feels good.

When you make me stop as I depart,
it feels good.
And when you stop while getting apart,
it feels good.

I don't like it
when you say sorry to me,
but the way you sorry,
really feels good.

When you come in thoughts while going to sleep,
it feels good.
And when the heart reminds you first thing in morning,
it feels good.

Red, Black, Blue, Voilet,
Who cares?
Whatever you wear, on you
Everything looks good.

I don't like it
when someone else talks to you
But when you talk to someone,
they also start to feel good.

Thought many times, to sit near and talk,
couldn't gather the courage to do so,
But seeing you even from far off,
feels good too.

When you look at me even once,
it feels good.
And when I keep smiling on those looks,
it feels goood.

Yes, it feels good.
But it's scary too.
The increasing anxiety drowns,
And pain inside continuously growls.

In few days you won't be near,
would have far gone from here.
Your memories will all I be left with,
And the things that feel good now
Will make me cry, forever.

My First Mental Vomit [Poem]

Well its frustrating,
Don't you think so?
When you have to say something,
But have no one to go.

Yes there are parents, but lets admit,
We haven't been as close to them.
Well may be when we were kids,
but now life's all different and grim.

Of course, there are friends to give a shout,
but they got their own problems too.
You don't want to freak them out,
and give them yours to chew.

Yeah, nowadays you have 'The Internet'
You can spend your whole life exploring.
But when you realize its hollower than thou,
It feels incredibly boring.
Google after all, is not the answer,
Not for everything.

Sometimes in life you hit a low patch.
And you seek someone to come hold you,
say "you idiot, why did you fall?"
and then listens to all your excuses,
without taking a call.
(I realize, one can do the same,
by standing in front of wall :)

And here goes inner pessimist:
"Hey, why would anyone choose a loser?
And if there is anyone, 'that' crazy,
Why would she choose me,
since losers are in majority."

So, you sit there alone,
or may be talk a walk.. lonely.
Oh God why this life sux,
Why can't I have a problem alley?

You don't always listen to me,
All I want is someone to listen.
But isn't made of concrete,
but blood and flesh.
OK not just a problem fellow,
but someone to share life's mess.
Someone a bit more intimate.
So you don't second guess,
just say and don't regret.

And when you realize its nowhere near you,
the frustration amplifies,
Noise in head screams out loud,
And the inner you silently cries.

Wanted to end this piece on a happy note,
say there is still battle to be fought.
That the 'solution' to problems is waiting somewhere,
eager to be found out.
Yes, hope is still there,
but that's dwindling day by day.
Becoming more and more difficult to tell now,
how much longer its gonna stay.

Is my faith weak or the 'fix' doesn't exist?

I NO Longer WANT to be an Engineer

(The very first post turned out to be a Super blog rather than a mini one, as promised. Well, sorry, but I had strong opinions on this one..)

First an excerpt from my friend's email..
To tell u the truth ! sometyms it's kind of frustrating to think one self as an engineer specially wen u have a university as gud (take it the other way) as mine. "6Th semester ends in just 1 n 1/2 months".how does that sound for tomorrow's times of india headline? but there is some respite , atleast from now onwards our course will be on time..but still i would say, whats the point of doing engineering like that?? i mean there has to be someone who should take responsibility..i mean, do we Indians even know the meaning of word" accountability?? any way, i won't bother u much ! since u are free..i'm giving u an open chance to air your views on this.
Sounds familiar? Well, to me it felt like someone took my thoughts there and wrote it as his. When I started my B.Tech. I had a lot of hopes.. Hope that I will be a better person after 4 years. Hope that I will not only be getting a degree and a job but also knowledge and confidence.. Hope that I won't just be a B.Tech but a Computer Engineer.. After all I chose Computer Science..

3 years have passed since then. While I am still confident of getting a degree and a job in an year. But all the hopes that I had from the college and from the engineering education have been brutally shattered (sorry, if you don't like the metaphors but I don't have better words to explain how I feel)..

I thought I will be doing innovative work, learning new technologies, building things that I could be proud and other be envious of, being in company of professors that are a master of their subjects... But, here I am today, doing the same old rot learning that I specialized in, back at school. Whats path3tic is that now, I can't even do that properly. Grades are getting lower and lower by each semester, dragging down the confidence as well.

Last semester I had a real scare in an exam. I had 2 real bad experiences which I won't want to have ever again in my life. I got to know, how it felt like going completely blank in an exam. How it felt like not being sure if you are going to get in even 50%.

Alright, so who is at fault here.. Me?
  • Me, because I refused to study the subject just because I didn't like it and didn't know how was that going to help me anywhere in the future.
  • Me, who didn't regularly attend that particular subject's classes because the teacher not only couldn't generate any interest in the subject but also seemed a bit rude to me.
  • Me, who thought of passing yet another exam by just cramming the notes a day before the exam... Well if you also feel so, then, sorry I don't agree with you.
I feel that a student should be given a right not to study any subject (say Maths) if he knows that he isn't exactly cut-out for it, and can better utilize his time making 3D models. If later, he will feel Maths has importance in his life, then he will automatically strive to learn it, as the need arises.

I also feel that one should be given freedom not to attend any class if he/she doesn't . I mean, whats the use of torturing him/her for an hour when he/she is not interested to study that subject. Will having 70+% attendance going to insure good grades and more importantly attained knowledge?

A counter-point that's given is that if there is no barrier of attendance then nobody is going to attend classes and there will be no difference in between a regular and a distance education college.
Well, I disagree.. What I have seen is that, if the teacher is brilliant and can motivate students then the class is not going to be empty. Pupil come not to mark attendance but to actually learn something. They respect the teacher and automatically behave. And those who don't have any interests in studies, aren't going to attend classes, whether the minimum attendance is 70 or 90%...

I am still to figure out..
  • Why do we need to study 6 subjects in 3 months (excluding practicals) and why do we have to keep our files well maintained even-though they are going to be trashed at the end of the semester?
  • Why do we have to spend half of the semester duration writing exams?
  • What are we actually going to learn in a 3 months (or in my friend's case in 1.5 months!) semester with books that seem more history than technology, teachers that seem more concerned with how the student looks or behaves in the class rather than what he/she is learning and a education system that wants to squeeze in every little thing to learn in 4 years time without even checking the ground reality and taking the problems of the learners into account.

    • Can't we instead choose 3 subjects out 6 every semester and study them properly rather than juggling with all of them?
    • Can't we spend more time doing practicals than copying practical work?
    • Can't we go into exams with an assurance that our hard work will be rewarded with proportionate grades, and we won't get more or less marks than we deserve?

But hey, who am I to ask these questions. Just an ordinary student, who wasn't even smart enough to get into an IIT (as if IITians are the brightest blokes in this country).

So, at last, to the question that my friend asked, I would say sorry my friend, there is no accountability in most part of engineering education in India. Their idea is that you can become an engineer only if you pass all the subjects they have prescribed and they will ensure that you get to sit for each of those exams (after all, you have paid money to them!). Now, whether you learn anything or not is not their responsibility.

And yes, you have the right to remain silent in this matter.. Thank you very much.

PS: I dream of one day becoming the Education Minister of India and recognize the Engineering education and Engineer as a profession. They are no better than unskilled labors... And also, upgrade all diploma holders to degree holders so that they stop feeling inferior.

The Journey Begins..

So here I am writing my first blog post. First thing first, it has been my dream to start my own blog, a dream I have been nurturing for the last 2 years. But due to some reason or other I haven't been able to post even a single blog till now.

Actually I wanted my blog to be perfect, whenever (and if) I start it. And because of that I never really could commit on starting up. But now it's time to Just Do It. So lets get started....

But hey before doing that, I would like to make it clear, why I have started this blog: This blog exists so that the blogger (thats me!) can express his feeling, vent his anger and get to know others' views on the things that he ponders over. This blog is also so that I can develop a habit of writing and blogging and get to learn this art. And also develop self - discipline by being a regular poster.

This blog certainly isn't where you will be gaining lot of knowledge (but I definitely will be sharing anything interesting that comes my way). So, if you are reading this blog to learn something or get some 'gyan', then I am afraid you will be disappointed.

The readers of this blog, if any, will most probably be my friends. And I want to keep it that way only. I don't want to be famous and get money out of this piece. And I am certainly not writing it because I want to show others that I am cool or unique.

So whenever you get to read this, all I want from you is to be consistent reader, if you can and a consistent criticizer (that you definitely can!), telling me the mistakes I have made and things I can improve on, because only then can I be an evolving and consistent blogger (I intend to post at least one blog every week).

I don't know actually how much time will I be continuing here (knowing my will and resilience!), but I don't want that to deter my spirit right now. Hopefully our journey will be long and fruitful. Amen...
